Welcome to Generation Gap where we ask you about your favorite generation of a certain multi-generational car nameplate. Then, explain why your choice is right to the rest of us uneducated folks.
I’ve had an idea for a new series on Oppo! This one, Generation Gap will be a series of posts where each week (give or take) I choose a particular multi-generational nameplate from a random manufacturer (requests accepted) and create a poll asking all of you Opponauts to vote for your favorite generation. Adding comments as to why you chose a certain generation is encouraged but not required. For this week: the Mazda MX-5 Miata, long loved British-style Japanese roadster.
The options:
First Generation (NA) 1989 - 1997 (aka Eunos Roadster)
Second Generation (NB) 1998 - 2005
Third Generation (NC) 2005 - 2015 (and facelift)
Fourth Generation (ND) 2015 - Present

figured that would be the case... :D

NA all day. I hate Miatas to a certain extent, but I did write a book in 5th grade about how much it was going to be a revolutionary car. IIRC it was 114hp, 114mph top speed

I would vote ND, but really, it hasn’t had any time to prove that it’s the best. So NA it is.

NB, more power, better suspension and brakes, doesn’t look like a bar of soap.
I haven’t seen the ND in person yet, so I’m abstaining from judging it.

NA. Although the ND seems to be a great modern option, the NA is a perfect sports car. You can turn it into nearly anything and need no real mechanical talent to work on. Got a spare month and a set of 10/12/14/17mm sockets? You can rebuild a NA. Every detail has been worked over time and again. The NB is similar in that regard, but the MS turbo makes the engine bay a bit more cramped.

NC even though I have never driven or even sat in any of them

NA, at least until the ND is available in BRG.

For now, I’d go with the first-gen, because it’s the purest, most lightweight of the bunch (also, pop-up headlights, bro).
But as I’m closer and closer to driving the ND for the first time, I’m conflicted... damn thing is wildly alluring.

That’s exactly my train of thought...

I like early 2000’s Mazdas, so NB. Just something about the design of the 2001+ Protege and Millennia, 2002-2003 MPV, 2003-2005 6, etc that I really like. Maybe the red taillights.

Reminds me of how the first Lexus LS400 reached 155 mph (which was the agreement of the Euro brands at the time) without limiters.

I remember that too!

114 mph around every corner bro! Trackdaybro!

NB, it’s a more refined NA with better aerodynamics and a nicer steering wheel (US market at least). Also that generation had the Mazdaspeed turbo edition, a Japan-only coupe (only production Miata coupe), and the first generation of the stout 6-speed (needed for crank hp in excess of 250-ish).

I went NB. I could have had any...
but it looks odd with the top down, like a boat.

NA gang 4 lyfe

ND, Mazda realized model bloat is not what you want in a small fun roadster. Also it’s the fastest.

Go vote! You’re the only one here so far who’s chosen NB...

I’ve had an NA (91), two NBs (00 and 03) and an NC (06) and I liked the ‘03 most of all.

I’ve had both a ‘91 Black & Tan with BBS wheels and a ‘01 Green and Tan SE.
After driving both I would recommend the NB2 miata all day every day. Especially a special edition with a 6 speed and LSD. You get significantly more power from the variable valve timing motor, the 6 speed shortens the ratio, and the later LSDs give you much better control.
Sure the pop up headlights are fun but the NB2s just offer you more car. With NAs on an upswing for prices and NBs still falling they tend to meet at the same price point now.

Me too, those NB2s are something else. Especially with a 6 speed and LSD if you get the SE packages.

Hah, were you the one to wreck the rear of the NA. I’m sorry to see that as they look like a beautiful pair!

No a texting 16 year old holds that honors. Hit me at 50+ while I was stopped waiting to turn left into my driveway. But I did take the coilover suspension, rollbar, and various interior pieces into the NB.
Oh, and I bought the NB from this guy. hahaha

Neither of mine were 6 speed, but the ‘00 was a suspension pkg car with the Bilstiens and Torsen. The ‘03 was a base, but still a lot of fun.
